We can all breathe easier today in Georgia. Senator Raphael Warnock, the smart incumbent Senator from Georgia, defeated Herschel Walker last night in the Georgia Senate runoff election. We dodged a bullet, Georgia!
We literally had to vote for Senator Warnock 4 times to get him a full term in the Senate. It wasn’t easy. My absentee ballots never came in the mail at all for the last two elections. Neither did the ballots for thousands of other Georgia voters. Republicans changed voting laws in the state between 2020 and 2022, reducing the time until the runoff, reducing the amount of early voting, reducing absentee ballot deadlines (ironic, since the ballots never even came), they reduced the amount of drop boxes, and moved them indoors, available only during voting hours – and basically making it harder overall for people to vote. Voter suppression was a big factor in this election for millions of Georgia voters.
Herschel Walker was a terrible candidate with a violent past and no experience in law or politics, but what’s remarkable is how close the election was anyway. I believe that breaks down to two factors: Raw Partisanship, and Herschel’s celebrity and football glory days. Trump was not a positive factor in the runoff because 1) Georgians despise Donald Trump and 2) he didn’t show up to campaign with Walker because Georgians despise Donald Trump.
Partisanship should not be something that takes precedence over what is good for the country. Warnock is obviously better for the country than Herschel Walker and his glaring ignorance would have been. People will always be drawn to celebrities, but that doesn’t mean celebrities should be politicians. Apparently this has to be explained to people. Also, the fact that experience matters.
Joe Biden is the first US President in nearly 90 years to not lose a single incumbent Senate seat from his party. Democrats and Democratic policies are far more popular in the United States than Republicans, and that’s been true for over 60 years. The reason Republicans win elections is their voter suppression.
To the media and punditry who keep saying that Joe Biden is “unpopular” – fuck you. Is that clear enough for you? Joe Biden is a popular president. Anyone who says otherwise is not paying attention.
Congratulations to Senator Warnock and the Democrats in the Senate. Congratulations to President Biden and all the voters who supported Raphael Warnock. We did it!
My message to the new Democrat-majority Senate is simple: Protect voting. Fix voter suppression and secure our elections from these fascist Republican bastards. Everything else after that will fall into place if voting rights are protected.
